The history of lever park

The history of lever Park Lodge has its roots in the railway coming to Horwich in 1884.

The coming of the railway resulted in a population boom in Horwich with the population rising from 3,761 in 1881 to 12,850 in 1891.

In the spring of 1889, a group of Masonic craftsmen resident in Horwich considered forming a lodge in Horwich.

The treasurer of Ellesmere Lodge NO, 730 meeting in Chorley was approached and he agreed to assist in forming a lodge.

A meeting was held at the Crown Hotel Horwich on the 8th June 1889 where resident masons attended, and a collection raised £ 1-15 shillings for a fund to form a lodge.

On the 5/6 August 1889 a further meeting was held this time at the Bridge Inn Horwich where the Provincial Grand Secretary for West Lancashire attended, reporting that the Provincial Grand Master was in favour of a lodge being formed in Horwich.

Talks were held with the Masonic hall at Bolton, and Provincial Grand Lodge of East Lancashire in respect to bringing masonry to Horwich as geographically Horwich was in the East Lancashire province, the boundary being the A6 trunk road which runs north south through Lancashire.

As the formation of a new lodge was being supported by Ellesmere Lodge and Townley Park Lodge which are in West Lancashire dispensation was obtained from East Lancashire Province for the new lodge to be formed in West Lancashire.

On Wednesday 13th November 1889 a meeting of founder members was arranged at the public hall in Horwich and Horwich Lodge in the province of West Lancashire was formed.

Later years saw the formation of other lodges, Westhoughton Lodge 4215 in 1921, Wilderswood Lodge 5932 in 1944, Rockhaven Lodge 7649 in 1959, Rivington Lodge 8013 in 1964 and finally Lever Park Lodge 8144 in 1967 which was founded from Horwich Lodge and members drawn from other lodges including 2 members from a Bolton Lodge.
